A Letter To The Readers

For those who are committed,

As many of you well know, we are in school during the school year and have little to no time to write Taya; this being Christmas break, we thought we would give an explanation to our abrupt stop in production.

What we decided as writers was to create a fairytale that reached a length of about 30 or so chapters. We have chosen to stop posting chapters past chapter 20 so it compels you to buy it when it is complete and that others don't steal it. However, we will be removing all but chapters 1 - 3 upon completion of the book, which will hopefully be released late May.

We would like to thank all of the readers of Taya, those who supported us in our endeavours and of course all of the Brown Dog employees who remembered our tea.

Sincerely,

Lane-Smith & Parker

Chapter 20: Heinous Betrayal

J’vonte’ slept with her hair tangled in her face, tossed around from yet another night of little sleep. Cold air swept through the crack in the door, chilling her face. A small crinkle in her features, due to irritation, drew her awake. Her eyes met the sun pouring through the window, it was later than expected. Sitting up right, her eyes scanned the room for the members of her group. Jasper, Taya, and... they were missing the taller, untrustworthy man. Sighs left J’vonte’s mouth as she shook her head, Taya tried to tell them, and now they were for sure done for.
She let the others rest a little longer, gathering up anything they had removed from their person. As her back faced the door, a sound crept from behind her. Whipping around, she stood on the balls of her feet ready to pounce. There in front of her, standing tall, was Zoeloft. Taking a step toward her, he placed his hand on her shoulder.
“I didn’t mean to startle you miss.” His eyes looked soft as if he was innocent of all of which he was blamed. “Was just getting some fresh air, need a hand.” J’vonte’ dropped her eyes, drawing a line from him to the two still asleep on the hard dirt ground.
“Wake the others, I’m going out to scout.”
“The elves are packing up and moving, I overheard a conversation between the older gentlemen and I’m presuming the leader of the dark elves.”
“They got what they came for then? Hurry, we haven’t much time, wake the others.” J’vonte’ peeked through the door, looking for the direction the elves had rested. Inside the small abode, Zoeloft gently woke Jasper, who then woke Taya. Soon the three of them took a stand behind J’vonte’, ready to begin on their travels. Jasper rested his hand on J’vonte’s shoulder, his touch much friendlier than his companies.
“We’ll rescue him... we will rescue them both.” Jasper’s words cooled J’vonte’s temperature, she would put her trust in him and Taya. She turned to face Jasper, staring into is golden complexion; Jaspers face was full of trust. She could not help but linger in his gaze, even for a second. There was a gentleness behind his eyes that J’vonte’ had not seen before. She turned to face the doorway, the cold stone arches urging her onward. She mentally shook off the warm feeling and refocused her thoughts. They had to find Raymond, that took priority over warm feelings.
The four of them started creeping forward, trying to stay out of direct view as much as possible. Zoeloft had fallen behind, J'vonte' had kept an eye on him since he came in. There was something suspicious about this whole situation, she couldn't tell if he was with or against them. Handing the lead to Taya she dropped back between the boys. Zoeloft caught her gaze and he shot her a smile, one that read he was with them, ideas filled J'vonte's head. Taya had history with this man, she had seen tension between him and Raymond, and even a little bit with his main company. The group came to a stop, Taya waving Zoeloft to the front, he passed J'vonte' sliding his hand upon his back for reassurance. Shivers crawled of her spine, if only Bastian was here, he would know.
"There, Akeldama and Mythra." Zoeloft carried his words smooth, he seemed to not fear the dark elf.
"What's the new Gem?" Jasper tried to focus his eyes on the blue jewel comfortably in the elves hand. "That's Elise's!" The expression overwhelming Jasper was non-explanatory, he seemed hopeful, scared, sad, and guarded all at once. Zoeloft comforted his friend by reaching into his pocket and pulling out the matching sister. He placed it in Jasper's hand.
"It was all that was left of her." Zoeloft whispered, "I never found the other, I'm sorry." J'vonte' examined the expression being shared by both men, she knew not of the story between them, but Jasper's face seemed to be non forgiving. As though he believed she was alive as this time, but with Akeldama holding her earring there was nothing but confirmation of her death. Jasper threw the earring on the ground, starring down the power hungry elf.
"Lets go, He can't have Raymond too." Taya glanced to see the angry and bitter expression written on Jasper’s face.
J'vonte' smoothly picked up the earring, placing it in her side pouch.
The group rounded back to the front of the castle where they had left Zenith and Ennadia. One by one they began climbing over the castle wall, where it had be just worn down enough to grip. Taya looked down from the top back at Zoeloft, she didn't approve of his presence but there was no sign of going their separate ways. She landed gracefully on the other said, there steps away stood proud was her dragon, instantly he bowed his head, letting her hand to cascade down his snout. She whispered. All of them had been over the wall by the time she finished, Zenith looked up and saw Zoeloft. Despite the words he had just heard he thundered on instinct towards him, pinning him against the wall, wings around him. Letting out a great roar to the rough, evil man, the only thing that looked back were innocent eyes. Zenith didn't think twice before letting out another cry, he had him now, and was gong to deal with it before more trouble was stirred up. Lightning quick Taya slipped beneath his wings, between dinner and her dragon.
"We need him." Zenith’s eyes grew from thin slits to a wider glaze as Taya spoke. She looked back at Zoeloft who was pretending to tremble and begging to be saved. Face to face with Zoeloft she addressed her dragon once more, "For now." Zenith turned back in a huff, allowing Taya on his back.
"We'll have to both take one." J'vonte' announced, "Ennadia is smaller than Zenith, we'll take Zoeloft..." Taya thanked J'vonte' with her eyes, as she offered Jasper’s hand on board.
Zoeloft made an attempt to make light of the days events, nervously offering J’vonte’ his friendship. The small talk, relating to the rainy weather and the armor of the elf guards lasted only moments and Zoeloft’s voice faded away, the wind taking his place. After a short while Zoeloft pointed out a clearing to J’vonte’.
“I know this place well, we can rest here safely, and in the morning we can set our trap for the elves. They must travel not ten minutes walk from this clearing.”
“Perhaps you do offer some wisdom” J’vonte’ responded hesitantly. The marauders landed in the cool grass, Zenith the happiest of all, rolling the thick field. Night began to fall, and the warriors set up two shelters, made of vines and brush that had been collected. Zoeloft volunteered to take first watch, J’vonte’ to follow when the moon had reached its peak, Taya would relieve J’vonte’ as the moon fell below the mighty belt, and Jasper would take watch just before the sun would break.
The crickets could be heard, singing their songs and laments. The mice scurrying about in an attempt to avoid the great night owl. Zoeloft sat, quiet and still, awaiting his new master. And at length, Akeldama appeared; behind him followed Azar, Mythra and several other elves that Zoeloft did not recognize. The shifty shapes of the elves baffled Zoeloft, and he wondered how they trended so lightly; the illusion disguised them as ghosts.
The pale elf, now a sheet of white because of the light that shone from the moon. Not a sound was made as the elf moved close enough to Zoeloft to speak without being heard.
“Where is the jewel?” His voice had an erie ring, as he attempted to whisper. Zoeloft imagined the air traveling through the elf’s throat without even touching upon the vocal chords.
He stuttered: “I do not know...” Akeldama gripped the man by his overcoat lifting him off the ground. “But I can take you to the one who possesses it.” Akeldama lowered him. “That tent” Zoeloft said, pointing to the tent that Jasper was asleep in. Zoeloft brushed himself off, taking a step back from what would be his greatest and most heinous betrayal.
It was a blur, as Taya awoke to several elves, including the one called Azar rushing to restrain her. J’vonte’ had woken at the same moment, and called to Taya to break through the back wall and escape. In a split second Taya without looking back had broken through several branches, fighting her way through the brush until finally breaking through to the other side. She heard the deadly sound of J’vonte’s blade falling at least one elf, and her cry has she was brought to her knees. Taya did not think, or turn, she had one impulse, and that was the only thing she acted on. Her feet met perfectly with the ground the grooves allowing her to move in silence. Torches and voices could be heard behind her as they searched for the remaining warrior. Taya called out to Zenith, and he was not a moment too late, swooping in and Taya leaping to his back, almost without him needing to land. Zenith soared high into the clouds for cover, the cold night air leaving its mark upon Taya’s face. She whispered into Zenith’s ear and they flew back to the city of Garitarc.

Chapter 19: The Darkest Heart

The room the group had made a temporary home had gone to rest, only the sound of shifting dirt could be heard as somebody rolled. Tension was thick, although everybody was sleeping it was apparent their dreams carried visions of fear and distrust. Every so often one of them would cough, clearing their airway from the dry dirt of which they rest upon. Zoeloft was restless, and the little noise emitted every so often crawled up his spine like a nest of spiders making it impossible for rest. Laying there, nothing but awake, his mind began to wonder. He was not a very educated man, and did not know much about lands outside of his own, despite having travelled through caves. Places he knew of, but population and history always a mystery. Pulling himself to an upright position he rested against the wall, sweat ran off his forehead. Thoughts of the dark elves were taking over, as well as the lies he had whispered to his comrade. The more the thoughts raced through his mind, the more they took on characteristics of a parasite, consuming any other thought. He had to know what the elves were after, it called to him, without any idea of what it was, he needed to possess that power. Jasper rolled over,  his face met a flicker of light peaking through the window from a torch just outside. As it flicked across his face, Zoeloft only saw a distorted man, one that no longer believed in him. Jasper would not know of the new ideas festering behind his smile, he knew his back would turn and the small tear between them would be tugged until all gave way. The ideas turned to dreams as finally the tainted man shut his eyes, relaxing with the corruption that he was becoming.
Zoeloft was the first to awake. The sky was a dull grey, the light from the torch illuminating the room ever so slightly. His companions were asleep, and there was no sign of movement throughout the kingdom. Zoeloft left the house, the echoing thud of his footsteps resounding through the stairwell. The doorway was an ugly brown, the wood was rotten and termites crawled across the repulsive frame. Still, Zoeloft knew the old courtyard lay behind the door that he had once known so well. His hand rested on the cold and rusty handle, as the man paused; he wondered if this was who he was, if this man with his hand on an old and rusty handle was the innocent boy who rode horses until dusk. A soft, yet audible creek could be heard as the sound of an old and rotten door was pushed forward.
The courtyard was as Zoeloft had remembered, but it was not a happy place, it encompassed the depressing colour of grey. The fountain had dried up, and the sun would not show its light to sparkle and dance on the pale stone. A cold wind from the west filled Zoeloft’s lungs. Inside Zoeloft realized that each breath was filled by the cold act of malice and fear that was brought about by his anger, his jealousy and his lust for power. Several stones lay on the tiled courtyard, a sign of a crumbling empire. Zoeloft kicked one; the stone flew to the far side of the yard making a soft sound as it bounced off the ground. As Zoeloft began to retrieve the pebble he heard footsteps and several voices. He cocked his head in an attempt to hear what the voices were saying. He was unable to make out anything as the wind blew its cold lament in his ear.
Through pillars Zoeloft caught a glimpse of the dark elves, a shiver once again crawled through his spine. He enjoyed it though, as if this was how a Werewolf felt on a full moon, howling, praising what had brought him to his darkest yet finest form. The wind echo’d the idea of the howling wolf, Zoeloft had to get closer. Step following step the man got close to what he desired, voices became clearer, squeezing through a small ally the visions and voices became one. Akeldama stood his back to him, he was holding something that Zoeloft couldn’t make out. Intensively listening a picture formed in his head, not knowing if it was in fact the truth, either way power existed and Zoeloft felt his own crying for it.
“The stone, it’s here.” Akeldama crushed whatever he was holding and dropped in the courtyard.
“I feel it to.” Zoeloft knew not of either men, the elf was obvious, but the old man responding was that of a wonder. He made up the idea of this being J’vonte’s father. “Do you think with the three we possess they hold enough power to locate it?”
“You are a very wise man Mythra,” the elf placed his hand on the elders shoulder. “I am glad you came to join forces.” A grim smile creased on Zoeloft, J’vonte’s father wasn’t captured as he was told, but a lying deceitful man, one just like himself.
“If all five can restore the wonders of the lost, I am certain they are meant to find one another.” As the men stepped together, pressing three unknown objects into one another, what the elf had dropped uncovered itself under Akeldama’s foot. Zoeloft eyes grew wide as they glanced upon the sister of the gem in his pocket. Reaching in, he held it there in his hand, his way to the elves, Elise’s earring.
He drew the earring from his pocket. The blue light that Akeldama and Mythra knew all to well lit up in Zoeloft’s hands. In an instant Akeldama had seen the light and rushed to the source. Zoeloft was brought to his knees by the power that the earring held. Something he could not explain pressured his legs, unhinging them and lowering his body to the cold stone.
“What you have belongs to me” Akeldama said, his fist emanating the same blue light.
“It does not belong to either of us, elf.” Zoeloft responded, remembering the day when Elise had worn the elegant jewelry.
“How dare you!” Akeldama extended his arm to strike Zoeloft down. When Myrtha’s voice was heard above the commotion.
“Leave him, Snake! He has not done anything to you.” The blue light in Akeldama’s hand began to fade and a calm expression could be seen upon his face.
“What do you want?” Akeldama asked, his voice cold.
“I want to join you” replied Zoeloft.
“And why would I let you join my elves?”
“Because I have the power that you desperately long for.” Replied Zoeloft holding the earring infront of him, blue light again glowing brighter than before. Akeldama sneered, but could not find a reason not to accept the man’s proposal.
“If I allow you to join in the ranks of the elves, you must first rejoin your friends, and deliver them to me. I knew the moment that you and several other had come to Garitarc. I have sensed the final gem; it is your friend who carries it.” “Jasper” Zoeloft thought. “He has the final jewel.” An anger welled up inside Zoeloft, one that he remembered ever so plainly the day that he lost Elise. Jasper had not trusted him, he had not told him of the power he possessed. Zoeloft’s eyes became sharp and fierce and a determination swayed whatever good was left inside his soul to a place deep down in the darkest hole of his heart. The cold face attached to the shell of a man who kneeled on the ground looked up at the pale elf who towered over him.
“It shall be done.” Zoeloft bowed his head, the blue light disappeared, and its knew owner smiled the evil smile of success.

Chapter 18: Five Companions

Taya shot J’vonte’ a panicked look, she did not know this king, but she now saw the power that Akeldama possessed. They backed away from the door retreating to the corridor and in the direction of the tower that they had hid. They raced down the hall, attempting to be quiet, yet moving as quickly as they could. They rushed up the stairs, J’vonte’ taking them two steps at a time, she swung open the door; there standing in front of them was Zoeloft, and a man neither the girls had seen before. Taya immediately drew her bone knife and held it to Zoeloft’s neck. Zoeloft, startled raised his hands in the air and did not move; he looked down the white blade into Taya’s eyes as if he had not recognized her.
“I will not go back with you” Taya hissed. Jasper also had his hands raised in an attempt to show that they were not a danger.
“We have not come to hurt you; we have come to assist you.” Jasper said, his tone calm and reassuring.
“This man” Taya pointed to Zoeloft, “Held me captive against my will for over two years, he is evil.” Jasper turned to Zoeloft.
Is this true my friend?” He asked, again, his voice was cool and relaxed. Zoeloft mumbled his words, doing his best not say the truth. His devilish eyes were dancing, searching, scheming, and trying to find a way to convince the onlookers that he was in fact innocent.
“Yes, it was wrong , I am sorry for what I have done. Taya, I have come to apologize to you for the wrongs that I have committed against you. You are so dear to me, and after all the trials I have faced throughout my life, I have found joy in your smile and happiness that I had not known before. I did not know how to treat you, I was insecure and alone. Please give me one more chance to redeem myself to you. I am begging you, I have changed and I am ready to do well by you.” J’vonte’ analyzed all that Zoeloft said; she was unsure whether or not it was the truth, it was so believable, yet perhaps his eyes, his lying eyes held the secret that would not reveal itself to her.
Zoeloft’s eyes were watering and though he was not a changed man, at least some of what he said was the truth. Jasper looked at his friend in true disappointment, after all those nights battling the idea of a wicked man, believing it could never be true. The friendship became broken. Jasper could not look at Zoeloft the same, he was a shell of the person he used to know. Despite how Jasper felt, he decided he would try to find the boy in Zoeloft; he knew there was at least a seed of truth behind the grand apology.
Raymond rode on Jasper’s back, intently listening to the conversation taking place in front of him. His head perked up, ears tuned to the sounds outside of the tower. On the cool draft rushing through the open window, he heard the cold voices approaching.
“Do not leave any home, any room, any part of the castle go unsearched” the voice said. Raymond shushed the conversation between Taya and Zoeloft, halting the apology. J’vonte’ stood, completely still, her eyes wandering in an attempt to find the voice that was hunting for them. Taya closed her eyes just as Bastian did, but again gave up, opening her eyes again, frustratedly. She made a mental note that she had been unable to see her surroundings with her eyes closed when she was upset, or panicked. Taya relaxed her body, she would learn in time to control every emotion and every feeling that would spurn her vision. Jasper moved to the window, on an angle so that he could just see a crack of the outside. He saw what looked like a lieutenant directing elves into several buildings. He leaned forward to whisper to Zoeloft.
“They will be in here soon, they are only two buildings aways. We need to leave now” His voice was urgent, and Zoeloft saw the panicked look in his eyes. Zoeloft’s eyes told Jasper that he did not want to leave the women, that he would stand by them, even if they had to defend them against whatever came through the door. The voices grew louder, and J’vonte’ unsheathed her long doubled edged knife. Her grip was firm and her hand was steady as she raised it to the top of the stairs. A door creaked and footsteps could be heard approaching the corridor leading to the bottom of the stairs. J’vonte’ back away from the stairs, raising her finger to her lips as she did. The five companions fell perfectly still and perfectly silent. The footsteps echoed down below, and gradually, began to climb the stairs. One stair at a time, consistently, thump thump, thump thump, thump thump. Taya held her breath, being sure to not make a sound. At first a foot came into sight, covered cleanly by a boot with designs running up the sides. The rest of the elf came into view. J’vonte’ shot forward, slicing his neck as she did so, moving past him and stabbing the second elf that Taya was unaware was even there, in the heart  and in a second motion snapping the young elf’s neck. All that was heard was gush of blood and the crunch of the elf’s neck being twisted.
“Quickly, through the door.” J’vonte’ said, motioning to the door that they had originally entered. Her voice was firm, the firmness shown in someone who has taken control, and is ready to lead. Jasper was the first to respond, moving to the door and slowly opening it so that it did not creak. With Raymond on his shoulders he did his best to be quiet, tip toeing out unto the castle wall. Raymond pointed up ahead to another stair way that lead straight down into a house, which they had seen searched not moments ago. Jasper placed the young boy down, encouraging him to scout for anymore elves, it would be easiest for him to escape alive if alone. The four remaining at the foot of the stairs split to either side, keeping a lookout while they awaited the signal. Raymond moved slowly across the wall, trying to look as innocent as possible. Under the disguise of a shadow he looked over the wall, eyes in search of any danger, looking back he waves the group to advance. Raymond reaches the top of the stairs, he sees a faint flicker of light below and some mumbled voices. Testing his luck he descends down the flight of stairs slowly. There were hole worn in Raymond's cloth shoes, the stone stairs were cold on his toes. The boy was overridden with fear, but he had to make sure the path was safe. Taking a deep breath the boy made it to the final stair, he looked up, looking back he could make out Jasper's face, proud and assuring, his safety.
"Nobody's this way." Loud and clear, an elf stood right around the base of the stairs, panicking Raymond sat on the last stair.
"Should we search the wall again?"
"We can't chance not finding them. Let's go."
"You follow, I'll lead." Azar was rounding the corner, the young boy shut his eyes, pretending to snooze. The large destruction prone elf nearly tripped over him, in rage he grabbed the sleeping boy by the poorly tailored jacket that cocooned the child. He swung them both around, Azar's back to the stairs and Raymond's face to the light. Feet dangling far above the ground the boy looked back at the elf clenching him harder every second.
"Excuse me sir." Raymond kept up the sleepy boy act."Why are you disturbing my slumber?" Without much words following, the elves decided to leave the young one in tact and take him to Akeldama. There was a chance he knew something. The sacrifice of the boy cleared the way for the rest of the group to make to the empty accommodation. Quickly they all rushed in, and turned off all the lights, Jasper looked out the window, pausing in honor of Raymond's duty.
"What now?" J'vonte' asked the men. "Are we going after the boy?"
"No." Taya snapped back, she was still taken by the presence of her enemy, anything that had to do with him she was not going to fight for.
"She's right." Jasper turned back and faced the others. The room was dark, but everybody could lightly see the silhouettes of others. "They don't know who he is, he'll be safe." Zoeloft uncover a small wooden stool and dusted it off, placing it beside Taya.
"We know why we came, but what is you're business here?" He took a seat. J'vonte' and Taya took turns in detail describing what they knew, which wasn't much.
“My father has been captured, by dark elves of the west. He is alive, but we do not know why he is of value to them.”
“These elves possess some kind of power, that originates from the jewels that they stole” Taya said. “My locket was apparently one of the jewels he was in search of, along with your father’s ring.” She looked at J’vonte’ her hair covering most of one eye.
“And you intend to, destroy the elves and rescue your father?” Zoeloft responded to J’vonte’ in sarcastically.
“Why not!? Why can’t we defeat this enemy? What makes them stronger than us? I have fought all my life, and I never knew what I was fighting for, until I lost my father; until I realized that he was the bravest of us all; until the light of dawn washes away the destruction and evil of the night. I will do whatever I can to save my father and my people. This is an act of love.”
The room fell silent. Zoeloft fearing to speak and Jasper lost for words. Taya placed her hand on J’vonte’s shoulder.
“We will not abandon him, but there must be a better way than an outright attack.”
“Raymond is in the midst of it all, if we could make contact with him, we could find the weak points of the elves defense; perhaps attack from the inside?” Suggested Jasper.
“Are we in agreement?” Asked J’vonte’. Taya and their new companions nodded their heads. The party of four began to plan the assault of a lifetime.

Chapter 17: Autumn Breeze

The water continued to fall over the face of the cliff, and the two men continued to stare in awe.
“This is a small country called Danenya.” Raymond piped up. “There once were several large tribes spread across it, leaving in harmony. Eventually, like everything, the peace between tribes diminished. One tribe lives on.”
“These are probably the people you lost your scout to Zoeloft.” Jasper said. Zoeloft got up from the rock he had fallen to, his eyes were slightly red, but there was no sign of sadness left in his voice.
“I suppose we should find this tribe then.” Zoeloft’s voice cut through jasper in a way he had never heard before. For the first time Jasper began to wonder if his friend had worse intentions then first told. This thought was interrupted by Raymond’s announcement about he how knew the way. Shaking his head, disregarding the imagined betrayal, he gestured Raymond to lead the way. The three wonderers pressed forward; youngest at lead, Jasper stood close after, Zoeloft bringing up the rear.
The forest got thicker and thicker, Zoeloft began to doubt the rift raft they picked up knew anything. Eyeing up the boy, he couldn’t imagine any reason of which Jasper wanted to keep him around. Raymond glanced back, catching Zoeloft’s observation of him.
“Right this way lays the only remaining tribe.” He took a step back, avoiding as much eye contact with Zoeloft as possible, the boy spoke strictly to Jasper. “The tribes name is Yelha.” Worry took over the boys’ voice, all trust for Zoeloft had left him as he watched him tense and squirm. Pushing past the final mass of vines, Zoeloft reached the opening first, with his first step he sunk to his ankles in water. The flood hadn’t been kind to Yelha, it was the only place still even the slightest submerged. The man pressed on, leaving his crew steps behind, looking for signs of life. Moments passed before Zoeloft snapped back at the young boy, who now sat on the shoulders of Jasper. “They should be here, I swear sir.” Raymond shook in fear. Jasper looked past his friend, seeing what he had missed.
“There,” Pointing at a corner of a settlement peering from behind a rock cliff. , “Somebody does live here.” Zoeloft eased his eyes, and turned to see what Jasper had discovered. To his surprise and foolishness he found the corner of the hut Jasper was pointing to. Huffing to himself he trudged further, getting to the hut he pushed the beaded door aside. A devilish grin grew back on Zoeloft face as exited the tent.
“She lives among them.”
A loud voice boomed out from behind them and a figure emerged. He was dark skinned and broad shouldered; several scars could be seen, they were recent, and his hand was bandaged.
“Could this be?” Jasper said out loud.
“Jasper, old friend, I did not think I would see you in these parts.” The two men embraced, kissing each other on the cheek.
“Zoeloft, this is my comrade and friend Bastian. We fought alongside each other in the Phoenix War.” Jasper said. “He saved my life many times.” Bastian nodded at Zoeloft, as a sign of custom and Zoeloft responded in kind. Jasper and Bastian continued to exchange old war stories as a fire was started and a hut prepared. Raymond had made himself at home, wrapping up in a quilt, sleeping soundly by the blazing fire.
“Of course you will stay as long as can!” Bastian said. Zoeloft sent Jasper an urgent look as Jasper hesitated on his words. “My friend” Jasper said. “We are in search of a princess by the name of Taya, you would not have seen her? She is Zoeloft’s love, and he has been in search of her for over a year.” “Yes, there is a Taya here” he eyed up Zoeloft. “I was unaware that she was a princess.” “The fairest of all” Zoeloft responded, a less sincere smile evolving on his face. “She is currently tracking an army of elves with my sister across the Burrowdowns, they have taken my father captive.” Their faces were serious and their brows were furrowed. Bastian and Jasper exchanged glances, their eyes met
and then the two turned away; knowing all too well that they were to speak late into the night after the crickets had fallen asleep.
Well into the night, the campfire flickered and warmed the party of four. Bastian had lead the travellers up the rock ledge to where most of the village still sat, waiting for the ground to absorb the rest of the storm. They sat out of ear shot of anybody passing by, Bastian being in charge in the absence of his father he didn’t want to cause any panic. Zoeloft had fallen asleep facing the fire, Bastian watched the man as his eyes finally give way. The two war friends engaged in eye contact, Jasper moved Raymond from his side, laying him next to the fire. Getting up the two walked into the home of Deimos, the saber tooth tiger stood next to Bastian, showing loyalty and protection. Fangs still covered in blood from dinner, Jasper stood a little uneasy.
“How do you know that man?” Bastian spoke quietly but disapprovingly. The trust in the man’s eyes reflected that of the sabertoothed tiger, the trust existed in the man he wished to protect, but not with the man he brought. Jasper looked deep into the rough eyes of his war partner, telling the tale of the good man he brought with him. Deimos growled and came between the men, Bastian called him off, “I don’t trust him, he has been lying to you.”
“We grew up together, why are you so quick to judge?
“Your friendship has blinded your senses. Do you not see the sickly look in his eyes? That hunger for power, the desire to control overwhelms him; Zoeloft is not the same friend you had long ago.” Jasper placed his hand on Bastian’s shoulder turning him away from the entrance and whispered in his ear. Nothing further was said, and Jasper went back to his place by the fire, wrapping himself in a long robe that he carried. The stars dimmed from sight and soon he was lost in a place that scared him more than reality.
Bastian sat on a rock that overlooked the fire, his eyes did not waiver, and no sign of fatigue could be seen upon his face. He heard the song of the owls, and soon the cry, and gentle weeping of his friend Jasper. Bastian moved from his rock and approached the fire, which had now turned to brightly lit coals. Jasper called out, reaching out his hand has he did. Calmly Bastian crouched down to his friend, and whispered; whispered a soft and beautiful love song, a poem of ages past. It
was the story of broken love, and the sadness of seasons, but as he finished the poem it resolved into a story of peace that set in his mind as the ocean rests its body after the storm.

The Colours of Autumn Breeze

In the Autumn when the leaves do fall
And the wives of Winter smile.
The skeleton trees follow me close,
Their eyes are shattering hearts.
I, the colours of Autumn breeze
Warming to the touch of fingertips,
But the ever cold North Wind,
With her chills of fear and hopelessness,
Lead me to the edge of being,
Though I fight for the warmth of light.

I cannot find my peace in this dark time.
So when the Autumn leaves have fallen
And Winter’s wives have breathed their song
I will hold the air of love for Her.
For the North Wind is my lover,
Though She knows not of my breeze.
So when the last of leaves have fallen
And the skeletons call my name,
I will disappear forever;
The North Wind takes my place.

She will hunt and growl and show her teeth,
Her heart shown on Her smile,
But with the cold caress of death
She cannot linger through her tears.
For the buds of spring appear,
She cannot help but join me too.
Through every warm month of the year
We will sing and play and shout,
But when the first leaves start to change
And the colours of Autumn call my name;

I, the colours of Autumn breeze
Will leave my lover in the wind;

Until the spring will come again.

Jasper moved his head and a calm rested on him, a smile forming in the corners of his mouth. Bastian moved back to his place on the boulder and did not move for the remainder of the night.
Morning dew hooked onto Zoelofts brow, a warm wind pressed on his face, irritated the man awoke. Eyes growing wide at the sight staring down at him, the piercing eyes of Deimos looked deep into Zoeloft, threatening him to lay still. Raymond awoke watching the fear in the deceiving man’s eye grow and grow, inside a small joy grew in the boys heart. Not death, but fear. The boy hoped the beast starring the man down would induce a state that would be peaceful. Finally, the sabertooth tiger huffed and left the man to know he was not welcome. Getting up, brushing himself off he glanced over at the other two in the group. Instantly Raymond dropped his gaze, pretending he was asleep the entire time.
“We’re leaving.” Zoeloft fired his robe and some food into the pack he was carrying. Without waiting for an answer he began walking toward the edge of camp. Jasper woke Raymond, and slowly packed up. Bastian was standing near the edge, recovering his stance after had being pushed by the disturbed man.
“Jasper, they went that way.” Bastian gestured to the opposite end of camp from where they had entered. “Go after her, but keep her safe.” Jasper and Bastian were now face to face, Bastian put his hand on the guests shoulder. “Keep her away from him.” The grip got tighter, “Please don’t let her into his hands.” The man showed true worry in his face, Jasper nodded and pushed Raymond ahead.
“Thanks for the tip,” Jasper looked away, then again over his shoulder “I will make sure she is safe.” The poem lingered in Jaspers head as the two walked to catch up to the leader. As they reached him he was investigating the area, anything for tracks. Zoeloft knew it would not be theirs, but the elves. They exited Yelya.
The three travelled and tracked for several days, they were unaware of it but they were always only matters away from who they followed. Travelling continued the way it began, Zoeloft making it harder and harder for anybody to trust him. With trust diminishing, Jasper and Raymond came closer together, keeping a close eye at all times. The nights haunted Jasper for he did not want to see his friend as something evil, often he would battle the thoughts with memories. Confronting his friend indirectly, trying to bring him to a time when everything was right. Little did Jasper know but this only turned Zoeloft darker, memories reminded Zoeloft of all that was ripped from him. Taya was not going to be the same, and not Zenith or anybody was going to stand in his way.
Days of tracking passed, finally the three looked over the terrains that lead to Garitarc. The men looked at the castle that taken them both in under its roof, their home. Zoeloft looked in sadness, the castle as a gloomy place tore him even more apart, this time it was his fault. The three got closer, reaching the castle walls, a scream of an innocent old man lifted over falling to the three travelers ears.

Chapter 16: The Stone Of Garitarc

J’vonte’ and Taya had flown for nearly three days as they tracked the elves. The two kept a safe distance, only using the mask of night to keep up. Akeldama feared that the two would be doing as they were, cautious he also moved in the cover of night. When dawn would break the cool mist of night would rise, Ennadia and Zenith would softly land, allowing the warriors to search for any signs to direct them on the same path of those they tracked. Several hours would go by before both were certain in which way to travel, then all the group could do is wait out until night crept back up on them.
On the third morning, while searching the area for tracks and clues, Taya stumbled upon a spring. The spring resembled that of the one her and Zenith had held camp at, years ago. Zenith did as was expected of a grown dragon, and rolled onto his back, splashing about in the ice cold water. Ennadia turning her head away from the foolishness of Zeniths ways, nose high in the air. The girls came to the edge of a rock, Taya sat down to dangle her worn and dirty feet into the refreshing water.
“Take some rest J’vonte’.” J’vonte’ still roaming her eyes around the opening for something yet to uncover; her eyes were wide, and movements were smooth. She moved around the spring the same way a lion would stalk its prey. “The water feels very nice.” Taya smirked at her ever working friend, making eye contact, J’vonte’s face lighten as she smiled back. The trained warrior took on the same playful mood as Zenith, who was still splashing every which way to cool himself. J’vonte’ leaped high into the air, lunging forward, landing a back flip in the deceivingly deep spring.
The sun was high in the sky, and the animals were taking their respective rests in the shade before another night of travel. Curled up in with her dragon, his head resting on her lap, Taya eyes resisted her need for sleep. J’vonte’ wondered over with two water pouches, overflowing with ice cold water. Handing Taya hers, J’vonte’ sat next to her troubled friend, leaning against the large bodied dragon. Petting the side of Zeniths head, she spoke softly.
“So, how did you and Zenith meet each other? You have such a strong bond, I would assume you must’ve known him since infancy.” Taya looked down at the big softy cuddled up to her. A tear formed in her eye, she tried to never think of that day. Though it was a day that started her on the path to the rest of her life, it was also a day that Taya wished she could change.
“It’s a long story.” Taya’s voice fell quiet. J’vonte’ noticed this was a topic she was not willing to discuss, being the thoughtful friend she was, the conversation was dropped.
“I'm sorry Taya, thanks for covering for me back with the elves..” Again Taya, showed how uncomfortable she was.
“That's sort of the same conversation. Sorry.” Taya leaned her head back, gazing at the canopy of  branches overlooking the group. Her eyes traced the branches, from one to the next, her thoughts running just as intertwined as what she gazed upon. Wiping her tear from her eye, Taya’s gaze turned back to her friend. “I don’t know if she’s even alive.” She took a deep breath, “I was so young, so naïve… but he was a baby, and was all alone. I was always taught to do the right thing, and take care of those who need help. In me following that teaching, it cost me my future.” Taya looked deep at her friend, tears reforming in her eyes.
“Your future is here, you are exactly where you need to be.” J’vonte’ smirked at her friend. Taya continued to tell J’vonte’ of when she was young. She talked about the life at the palace and her family in much more detail than passed to Akeldama.
“I wish I had a brother like you.” Taya explained. She wiped the tears from her face and took in a deep breath. Turning her head to look at J’vonte’ and drawing up enough emotion to smile, her eyes closed but opening as she reassured her friend that she was okay. “I have never had a friend who I could openly talk to, or someone that I could trust my life with.”
“Sweetie, I’ll always be there if you ever need me.” Taya wiped away the remaining tears and stood up, looking at her surroundings; there it was, a piece of bark had been torn away from a tree in the distance. She pointed towards the spot.
“They went that way” Taya said, a slight sniffle reverberating in her voice.
“Are you ok to ride?” Asked J’vonte’. Taya nodded and smiled, she knew that they were gaining ground on the elves.
They took to the skies, Zenith refreshed and ready fly. The sun was preparing to set and Taya knew that they had a long night ahead of them. For several hours all that they saw was the vast array of trees spreading across the horizon, it reminded Taya of when her father would give a speech; the kingdom would gather, and all that she could see as she peaked over the grey wall was a sea of faces. Now she was surrounded by a sea of green, ever persistent, showing the colour of her lying eyes. Something about flying took away all of Taya’s pain and worry, despite what danger was waiting for her when she landed. Zenith and Ennadia swooped down in sync, flying close to the tree tops, staying far away from the large open sky. The warriors looked at each other, their eyes not yet able to pick up what their alibies could. Taya closed hers and leaned in closer to her dragon, trying to connect their energies and see what he could. Far in the distance, the tree line completely broke, landscape changed from forest to rolling hills, and acres of valley. In an almost deserted area, there it was, a castle. As they flew closer , Taya continued to focus, for human eyes could still not reach far enough. It was once a great castle, one she could tell that had gone through tragedy and depression. Years upon years had beaten down this kingdom, but Taya did not recognize which kingdom it was, or why they were going to investigate it. J’vonte’ called out to Taya, suddenly opening her eyes, she realized her and zenith had taken off much further than J’vonte’. Slowing down, the four regrouped.
“There’s a kingdom in the distance, Zenith and Ennadia must sense more than can be seen.” Taya told her friend what she had seen, puzzled and confused she went on, “It doesn’t seem like a functioning kingdom, more abandoned than anything.”
“Garitarc.”  J’vonte’ filled Taya in on the story of a crazed man trying to take over, finally vanishing out of the kingdom after many failures. She told of a man who had everything ripped from him, and eventually lost sight of any good. A bitter man who started his own kingdom, one based purely on making him happy.
“Zoeloft.” Taya whispered to herself, no doubt in her mind that the crazed man had been the same who captured her.
The group flew closer, finally being able to identify the castle to which they had assumed. Landing walking distance away, the two witnessed the work of Akeldama. A blue energy boomed from the castles walls, and smoke raised shortly after, thick, black smoke. J’vonte’ told their companions to wait for their calling, and with that, Zenith slouched down his tail wrapping around a tree. The two young women moved along the tree line, heads bowed, knees bent. They reached a lower section of the wall that reared its head next to the trees that Taya and J’vonte’ bordered. J’vonte’ began to climb the closest tree to the decaying wall. It did not reach the top, but a thin branch reached out to a ledge that hung out from the wall, similar to that of a window; perhaps one that had been boarded up and left for time to deteriorate. The once beautiful architecture crumbled for Taya and J’vonte’ to see.
Once J’vonte’ had reached the thin branch that ran to the ledge, she went unto her hands, trusting her balance to take her to the side of the castle. As the branch began to bend with J’vonte’s weight she swung catching the ledge with her left hand, her right hand following. She pulled herself up unto the ledge and began to scale the cracked and rugged wall. Taya also began to climb the tree copying the same movements as J’vonte’. She was smooth and natural as she leaped to the ledge. It reminded her of the windowsill in her castle back in the kingdom of Caelestis, small, yet beautiful; the perfect size for a curious child searching for a piece of beauty in dark world.
J’vonte’ had reached the top of the wall by the time Taya was standing comfortably on the ledge and she looked down at Taya, raising a finger to her lips. Taya was motionless, barely breathing, watching for any danger that J’vonte’ had sensed. She saw her friend move over the wall and unto a walk way. Taya closed her eyes, and listened for any commotion; she only heard the quiet swish of J’vonte’ unsheathing her long dagger.
A moment later J’vonte’ peaked back down at Taya and motioned for her to join her on top of the castle wall. The two snuck their way through the kingdom, civilians still rested here, but it wouldn’t be for much longer if the elves were to stay. Staying high and in the cover of the shadows, J’vonte’ and Taya got closer to the raising smoke, assuming the action would still be taking place. Taya began to cough, her partner turning rapidly back shooting a glare that directed Taya to remain silent, no matter what. The smoke became heavier and heavier the closer the two got, soon blinding them.
“Taya,” J’vonte’ whispered, “We’ll have to wait until the smoke clears. They are right under us though, I can hear them,” the two took a seat upon the top of a tower, as they did two sounds presented themselves. J’vonte’ heard Akeldama send a man to the ground, Azar ripping him apart, and the screams of an innocent man. J’vonte’ closed to eyes to reflect on the action taking place, wishing there was a close end. Taya grabbed hold of J’vonte’s wrist and slowly began creeping around the roof. They moved around as silently as they could, the sound Taya heard over the cries of the innocent man was a miracle. The door to the inner tower was left open, for whoever came out was surely only making a quick round. Navigating their way as quickly as they could down the stairs the two went undetected.
They followed the sounds of Akeldama’s voice which was ringing out for all in earshot.
“Bring me the king!” He demanded. Taya and J’vonte’ entered a small passage way which lead in the direction of the voice. As they reached the end of the corridor they could hear a second voice, one that was bitter, yet calm, as if it had endured many years of sorrow.
“I’m here, elf. I will not run, or turn my back on my people, unlike you.” His hair was white and receding. His eyes were a pale grey, torn from sadness. Nevertheless, the broken king stood his ground, not breaking eye contact with Akeldama. J’vonte’ and Taya peeked through the door to watch the king and the elf.
“Where is the stone of Garitarc?”
“So you have come for it, after all these years. My father warned me when I was a boy. He told me that one day someone would come for the stone of Garitarc. I did not expect it to be you.”
“Where is it?!” Yelled Akeldama, his hands beginning to glow blue.
“You do not know the consequences you bring, you are cursed.” In a rage Akeldama put his hands together a blue ball of energy shot from the stones and made contact with the man standing beside the old king.
“You have been warned!” Akeldama said. “Tell me where you have hidden it.”
“You will never find it, Snake. It does not rest here, it will never return to its home.” Akeldama held out an item in his hand, showing it to the king.
“Do you not know where I found this? Yes, it belonged to your daughter, but no more. Where is its match?” The king fell to his knees, clutching the earring in his hand, tears streamed from his eyes.
“We never found it, she never came back” he choked out. “I loved her, and I would have given her my kingdom, in all of its wondrous glory. She was always wild at heart, looking for an adventure, I should have known, she was not meant for this, she would have conquered the world with her smile had she wanted to. I will not let you take her memory from me.”
With that, the king stood, head high, determination written upon his face. He drew his sword one final time, holding it out in front of him, pointing at Akeldama’s heart. In one swift stroke the old king fell to the ground, and the blue light disappeared. Taya saw the life drain from the king’s eyes. He had given everything for the memory of his precious daughter, Elise.

Chapter 15: Sir Raymond

The birds were chirping, and a light layer of mist rested on the thick grass. The sun was just beginning to wake the world, its golden rays reflecting off the dew that hung on the field like a sheet pulled tightly across a bed. Across the river on top of a hill that overlooked several fields were two men; they rode on horses and appeared to be unconcerned with their surroundings.
Jasper looked at his old friend, he could see underneath the slightly weathered face and the rough features, the man he once knew still existed.
“Its like old times” Jasper said, smiling with a glint in his eye.
“One of us hasn’t changed much” Zoeloft said laughing back at his friend.
“How do you know that she is this way?” Asked Jasper.
“I sent a scout this way, and I never heard from him again.”
“Sounds ominous.” Sarcasm dripping from Jasper’s mouth. “I’ve seen a lot of things Zoeloft, things that I would gladly forget.” The two men paused, the beauty of nature soaking in around them.
“Both of us” Zoeloft said. They rode off into the distance, approximately in the direction of Yelya. The sun rose higher into the sky as the day went on, the two men only stopping to let their steads rest. As the day turned slowly to night, Jasper thought he heard footsteps, perhaps not human, but it occurred to him that something was following them. Jasper whispered to Zoeloft.
“I don’t think we are alone.”
“Yes, I saw some movement to the right.” In a quick movement Jasper leaped off his horse and stretched out his hand into a fairly concealing bush. He pulled out a little boy; the boy was kicking and flailing his arms.
“Put me down, brute!”
“It has a sense of humour” chuckled Jasper.
“Watch out, it could be dangerous” laughed Zoeloft.
“He reminds me a bit of you when we were young” Jasper said.
“On the contrary, he much resembles you!” replied Zoeloft. The two men laughed for a while, almost forgetting that they had a new impostor.
“Excuse me sir! Please put me down!” Jasper looked down at the boy, curiosity appearing on his face.
“And what is your name young man?”
“My name is Raymond, but soon I shall be Sir Raymond!” The boy exclaimed. He looked to be about nine years old, long blond hair nearly reaching his shoulders and a surprisingly stern expression painted on his face.
“And how are you going to do that Sir Raymond?” Jasper asked.
“I’m not a knight yet! I am going to slay the dragon and rescue the princess!” Raymond said, confidently.
“Oh ya?” Zoeloft said, raising his eyebrows as he did.
“Well it seems like a noble quest young sir” Jasper replied, a smile forming on his face. “I think it is time for you to be off on your way to fight the monstrous dragons!”
“No! I have to stay with you! You shall lead me to my princess, we shall be the three noble knights.” He swept his hand across the horizon staring into the distance as he did.
“I’m afraid you are on your own kid.” Zoeloft responded. “You will only slow us down, and you do not know of the danger that lies ahead.” The little boy gritted his teeth.
“I can handle any danger we come across! Danger is the sandal on my foot!”
“Oh ya?” Zoeloft said a second time. “It is time for you to go little fella.”
“But you are my friends.” The boy said, his voice trailing off. Jasper turned to Zoeloft.
“He can ride with me, I don’t think he will be a nuisance, besides, if we come across anything, we can just leave him in charge of the horses; he’s harmless.”
“He is your responsibility then. The last thing I wanna deal with, is some kid.” Zoeloft turned to Raymond. “Alright kid, you can come with, but you have to be quiet, and if we come across any danger, you are in charge of the horses and are under no circumstances to help us, okay?” Raymond nodded, an enormous grin coming upon his face. Jasper promptly lifted Raymond up unto his horse.
“Hold unto me when we are riding.” Jasper smiled, then winked at the boy leaning over to say something so that Zoeloft did not hear.
“He is a little rough around the edges, but underneath, he is a good person. Don’t worry kid, I’ll take care of you.” The night had ended and the sun began to rise once more.
Raymond pointed up ahead. There in the distance was a cloud of smoke just rising above the tree line.
“It could be what we’re looking for” Jasper said. They continued to ride towards the heavy smoke. It rolled out of the trees, exaggerating the beams of sunlight that peeked through the vast forrest. As the three travelers approached the mysterious sight, the smoke surrounded them, encompassing them so that they were unable to see one another. The light shown through the smoke blinding the three that slowly moved into the forrest. The sheet of white that lay in front of Jasper did not frighten him, he drew his sword and continued to dismount, whispering to Raymond as he did.
“Do not move. I will return.” Zoeloft followed his friends lead, dismounting and tying the reigns to a nearby tree. The two men silently moved to the source, swords drawn, eyes wide. A large willow tree confronted them as they reached what appeared to be the center of the great smoke.
“Where is it?” Zoeloft asked his friend. Jasper tapped Zoeloft’s shoulder pointing upward. A great phoenix rose from a branch of the willow tree and into the day’s sky. Jasper shuddered.
“There is someone very powerful nearby.”
“What are you talking about?” Zoeloft asked.
“I fought in the Phoenix war.” Jasper replied. “It started because of that great bird.” Jasper began to back away sweat dripping down his face.
“We need to leave this place. There is power here that we alone cannot defeat.” Jasper said as he began to walk towards the horses.
“We must fight it? Can we not join this person?”
“You do not know of what you speak Zoeloft. They say he is the very mist that you breathe, that he does not have a body, and the trees whisper his name. This is dark magic.”Jasper said. Zoeloft grumbled as he followed his friend back to the horses. The smoke was beginning to clear as they reached Raymond.
“What did you see?” Asked Raymond, excitedly. The two men did not respond, but when Jasper mounted his horse he turned to the young boy.
“The less you know, the better.” Raymond was silent. Jasper and Zoeloft managed to find their way through the mystical forrest, being careful not to arouse anything. They did not speak, and all that could be heard was the quiet thud of the horses on the soft forrest floor.
As they reached the edge of the forrest, it opened up unto a wide escarpment; water poured off the enormous rock cliff that overhung an expansive forrest, bordered by mountains.
“That is spectacular.” Jasper said. He was not speaking to either of his companions, but needed to put voice to the grand sight. The sweeping landscape spoke to each individual differently. Zoeloft wandered out unto the giant rocks, and fell on his knees, tears forming in his eyes as the most painful moments in his life flashed before him. Raymond stayed on the horse, his eyes wide. Jasper stared at the water that disappeared over the edge, each droplet never to be seen by his eyes again.
“Where are we?” Jasper thought to himself. “What land is this?” Raymond leaped from his horse.
“I know this place, I’ve been here before!”
“You have?”
